Steps Involved in the Process of Designing E-learning Courses

We all strive to complete our eLearning projects successfully. But, many a time, small mistakes ruin projects. To avoid these mistakes, we need to plan every step properly. In this blog, we will see the steps involved in the process of designing eLearning courses that help complete our projects successfully.

Step 1: Know the Client Requirements

The first step in the process of eLearning deisgna and development is to identify the client requirements. If the following questions are answered, we can be on track and meet the client requirements.

  • What is the training goal?
  • Who is the target audience?
  • What is the budget?
  • Which authoring tool will be used to develop the elearning course?
  • What is the timeline?

This is the most important step as we decide the entire flow of the eLearning project.

Step 2: Gather and Analyze Inputs

In the second step, the raw training content (inputs) provided by the client is analyzed. The content may be given in the form of PDF files, MS-Word documents, Powerpoint presentations etc. These are “sorted out” to identify the “nice-to-know” and “need-to-know” information. In this step, we can take the help of the subject-matter expert SME to comprehend the content.

Step 3: Creating the Storyboard

After finalizing the inputs, it is now time to create the elearning storyboard. In this step, we formulate the learning strategy i.e. what visuals should be used, how should the content be presented, how much audio should be used and so on. The instructional designers leave a note to the developers that specifies how the slides should look like and what they should contain.

Step 4: Develop the Course

Once the storyboard is created, it is given for development. This is the step where we give life to the thoughts given in the storyboard. Each slide of the eLearning course is developed separately, according to the images, audio, animations (if any) etc., and all slides are integrated at the end.

Step 5: Review and Implement Changes

The quality of the course determines the success of the eLearning project. So, it is very important to create a flawless eLearning course. The course and storyboard must be reviewed at at each stage to avoid mistakes.

For an error-free eLearning course, one must make sure that the:

  • Course contains no grammatical mistakes
  • Usage of colors is proper
  • Text and visuals are aligned properly
  • Navigation is simple and learner-friendly

Step 6: Deploy the Course

After finishing all these steps, it is now time to deploy the online learning course. The course can be deployed either on an LMS (Learning Managemnet System) or a learning portal, based on the client’s requirement. If you want to track the performance of the learner, LMS would be the preferred choice.

These steps ensure smooth and easy development of eLearning courses. What do you think? Do share your views on the same.
