Mobile learning is learning facilitated through mobile devices such as smartphones, ipads without the learner being obliged to stay at a fixed location. Therefore, mobile learning cannot be seen as a new addition to the existing training methods. But, it can be viewed as a complementary way to enhance the performance of all types of training methods. However, not all training programs can be offered through mobile devices.
Here, I would like to share some training programs that can be delivered through mobile devices effectively. Let’s have a look at them.
- Product Training
- Safety Training/Operator Training
- Compliance and Other Mandatory Training
- Onboarding or New Employee Training
1. Product Training
In today’s competitive business environment, product training plays a critical role in the success of organizations.
Bite-sized learning modules provide just-in-time information on products in a variety of ways. You can provide information related to product portfolio, troubleshooting steps, assembling procedures, features and benefits, unique selling tips, and competitor comparisons of specific products.
This knowledge helps a product manager improve the sales of the product and ensure better customer satisfaction.
2. Safety Training/Operator Training
Annual figures for the year 2013, released by HSE, indicate that 27 million working days were lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury (Source: hse.gov.uk).
M-learning can be used to explain the causes of workplace accidents such as trips, slips, falls, electrical accidents and injuries caused while handling or lifting equipment. These can be done very well with mobile learning. We can avoid workplace injuries with just-in-time “knowledge bytes” on safety guidelines.
3. Compliance and Other Mandatory Training
Compliance and other mandatory trainings can be delivered effectively using mobile learning as it reduces the compliance risk. Legal training, ethics training and workplace harassment prevention trainings can be imparted on a regular basis with the help of mobile learning.
Training on a wide variety of rules, policies, and procedures can be delivered effectively with the help of mobile learning.
4. Onboarding or New Employee Training
Onboarding or new employee training is another area where we can use mobile learning. We can train our new employees with bite-sized mobile learning snippets that could be in the form of:
- Videos with a welcome message from the CEO or a senior manager
- Modules providing information on HR policies and information security
With mobile learning, we can reach all employees, no matter where they are and where they work. Hence, mobile learning is ideal organizations to train their employees, of different levels, with diverse needs.
These are some of the training programs that can be delivered through mobile devices for effective learning. Please share your thoughts.
