Creating eLearning courses is not easy. And, today the demand for eLearning has risen like never before. Most organizations have made eLearning their primary source of training. As a result, employees have become accustomed to the know-how of eLearning. Hence, churning out eLearning courses one after the other has given the training format a tag of boring or uninteresting.
This reaction has given training managers and instructional designers nightmares. Wondering how to bring about a paradigm shift among learners? In this post, I will share three ways to kill boredom and re-generate interest among learners.
1. Get Modern and Informal:
Gone are the days when formality was the rule of the day. Being too formal and dictatorial will bore your learners to death! You don’t have to go out of your way to be informal, and all you need to do is write in a more spontaneous and conversational way. Always remember that eLearning does not involve a physical instructor. So, it’s the tone that decides the first impression of your course. A friendly, informal tone not only educates but also engages your learner. Take a look at the traditional and informal\modern ways of writing the content of an eLearning course.
a) Formal: This course ‘Panic Disorder’ gives an overview of the ‘the symptoms and treatment’ for panic disorder and demonstrates how to cope with this disorder.
b) Informal: Hi there! I am John, and I will guide you through the course ‘Panic Disorder’ that highlights the symptoms and treatment for panic disorder. I will also tell you how to cope with this disorder. Let’s now see what panic disorder is all about.
2. Get Active:
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. This quote is true because passive learning is boring. In most cases, when an eLearning course is passive in nature, learners remember information only till they pass the final test. Passive learning discourages long term application. Passive instruction assumes that learners only want to fill information in their heads. Active instruction, on the other hand, creates a learning environment that reinforces and adds to prior knowledge. Have a look at an example of passive and active learning to understand better.
3. Get Visual:
It is a well-known fact that we remember images more than text. Too much of text on the screen will kill your learners’ interest and urge them to go to the next slide immediately. However, you cannot always replace text with images, and you need to strike a balance between the two. For instance, you can use illustrations, diagrams, info-graphics and icons to represent text in a more visual and an informative way. Below is an example of an info-graphic in an eLearning course.
