Types of Scenario-based Learning in Online Training [SlideShare]

Scenario-based learning needs no introduction. It has been one of the popular instructional design strategies that is known for its immersive learning capabilities. It allows learners to experience real-life work challenges and get diagnostic feedback in eLearning courses as they progress, since every action reflects learners’ choices.

Watch this free webinar on how to make sticky learning experiences with instructional design strategies.

Unlike any other eLearning course (where learner passively absorbs information), scenario-based learning encourages learners to actively participate, throughout the learning process.

But, when does scenario-based learning makes the most sense? This eLearning design strategy is the most useful when:

  • Decisions made at certain points can affect the consequences
  • Tasks require critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • It’s difficult to offer real-life experience
  • There’s no single correct solution to an issue

To summarize, scenario-based learning makes learners apply their existing experience, subject knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in a risk-free and “close-to real-world” working environment. This allows them to acquire the necessary skills needed to deal with similar problems at work.

But, while we know how effective scenario-based learning is, not many know its different types. Scenario-based learning can differ based on purpose and complexity. Under each of these types, you’ll find further classifications that ensure your corporate training projects are high-impact and relevant.
