Many organizations are using eLearning for training their employees. While most benefit significantly from using this format, there are a few companies that lose out even after utilizing the best resources and spending huge amounts. How is it that eLearning benefits one organization and not the other? Most of the times we know the answer to this question. However, only few dig deeper to find out what went wrong.

Poor Need analysis:
Training analysis takes place when your client or stakeholder decides to enhance certain skills of his/her employees. An analysis takes place to identify the skill gap, and when it is identified the right approach is selected. It is here where the first major mistake is made. Even though eLearning may seem the best option to train a huge number of employees at the same time, it is best to analyze if the staff member is capable of training himself/ herself online. It makes no sense to use eLearning just because it is an affordable proposition. Examine whether eLearning is a suitable delivery format for your trainings. Can the gaps be bridged through eLearning?
Gap in communication:
This is a major issue that is faced not just in implementing eLearning but in every aspect of organizational dealings. Communication with the client or stakeholder is the most important piece in the whole eLearning puzzle. You need to ensure clear and consistent communication until the end of the project. Even the tiniest of the gaps in communication can lead to disasters. For instance, misunderstanding your clients’ needs right in the beginning can bring your course to a complete halt as it is most likely that your client will reject it as it does not meet his/her requirements.
Most of the times, we use the digital media to communicate with our clients it is imperative that aspects such as language and pronunciation do not hinder communication with the client.
Poor project management:
This factor is linked to training analysis; it is important that the project manager ensures that the business needs are clear and is aware of the risks involved. Often the project manager understands the training needs but fails to grasp the time needed to complete the project, leading to last minute expenditure and amending of timelines. This only creates a set back to the initial plan made by the project manager. It is important that all the stakeholders are involved while creating and implementing a project.
Failing to understand the learner:
If the instructional designer has an unclear idea of who the learners are, then it is difficult to understand them and their learning environment. Many a time, the instructional designer does get into the skin of the learner.When a course is created just for the sake of creating it and not for facilitating learning, you lose your learner and in the end your course fails to meets it requirements.
There is a need to understand the learner at an individual level rather than just look at him/her as a part of your target audience. By doing this, you can create a higher level of motivation and an opportunity to explore learning.
Wrong instructional strategy:
An instructional strategy is set right in the initial stages of course development, it is the bases on which the course is created. If you go wrong here you go wrong everywhere. A wrong instructional strategy signifies two things; first that as an instructional designer, you have failed to comprehend the subject at hand and second that your learner will not grasp the subject and this will further confuse your learner. As an instructional designer you need to come up with the right strategy for the right content, always coming up with something new to keep your learner involved.
E-learning is a great tool that breaks the barrier of time and space. Keep these five reasons in mind, when you decide to use eLearning for your training needs and you will never see your eLearning project fail.
