Factors Influencing Content Chunking in E-learning

In my previous blog, I explained what content chunking is, why it is done and a few easy steps for chunking the content in eLearning courses. In this blog, I would like to discuss the factors that will influence the freedom of chunking. Chunking should be done considering factors such as audio and visual strategies used, content type, etc. Here are a few guidelines on when to chunk content more and less.

When should you chunk the content more

  • When the course has adequate audio:
    • Take utmost advantage of the audio and chunk the content more.
    • Show small stand-alone sentences on the screen and give detailed descriptions using the audio.
  • When explaining a process or a procedure:
    • Show chunked content using interactivities (such as click on tabs, click on images, etc.).
    • Use audio to explain the process in detail.
  • When the course has a large number of visuals:
    • If the course contains several visuals, we can make the best use of the ocular content and chunk the text because visuals speak better than words. Use appropriate visuals to help learning (e.g. show the animation of the process or a flow diagram of the procedure)
    • Improper or minimal chunking in such cases leads to redundant content.

When should content chunking be minimal

  • When the course is not audio dominant:
    • If the course has minimal audio– chunk the content less and give a detailed explanation on-screen.
    • If the course has no audio – avoid chunking to retain the meaning of the content and help learners understand it better
    • Use audio to highlight important points of each screen
  • When explaining facts and principles:
    • Chunk the content as little as possible without changing the actual meaning of the content.
  • When the course has more text/ less visuals and no audio:
    • When the course is content-heavy, with very few images, show the entire content on-screen, in order to make the learner understand it better.
