The other day, while I was trying to explore the experiences of organizations with eLearning, I had an opportunity to learn about the factors that contributed to successful eLearning implementations. I wish to share them with all of you.
Processes in place at the beginning
Organizations benefit if the implementation plan, structure of the project and accountabilities of the concerned people are well-defined even at the beginning of the implementation process. Milestones and deliverables must be clearly identified. An evaluation plan could then be developed to measure progress at each stage. This ensures clarity on what to be delivered, when and more importantly if what is delivered is useful – Is it in sync with the organizational objectives?
Role of the top management
eLearning often necessitates changes to the way employees work in an organization. This is likely to make most of them feel apprehensive. The top management often has a key role to play in addressing the concerns of the workforce. The benefits of eLearning must be explained to the staff. Workers show willingness to embrace change if they are able to understand its use. Proper support to the personnel during the transition period often works wonders.
Involvement of the learner
Efforts should be made to incorporate the views of the staff. Their learning needs and styles should be analyzed to make the implementation effective. When implementing an organization-wide eLearning program for a company with several strategic business units, it is important to understand the unique needs of the employees in each unit.
Availability of an exclusively dedicated team
A team of qualified personnel, working exclusively on the eLearning project, increases the chances of its successful implementation manifold. The technical and content specialists, critical to an eLearning program, should be able to devote adequate time
Smooth flow of information
Effective information flow is vital to the successful implementation of an e-Learning program. Proper mechanisms have to be put in place to ensure hassle-free communication at all levels.
Proper risk management
Adequate provision of resources and time to mitigate risks are crucial factors to be considered in the implementation of a project. Organizations are not expected to make compromises on quality or the other aspects of the project. Various other factors could contribute to the success of an eLearning project. Effective leadership has proved critical to all successful projects.
