Prompting Learners to Complete an E-learning Course

To acquire the habit of learning is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all of the miseries of life

If your learners are skipping chapters by simply clicking next, then it’s a signal that your training courses are failing to provide the intended learning. Your courses must grab the attention of your learners as well as elicit responses from them. Successful e-learning courses engage learners right from the first screen. So, how do you ensure that your learners complete the courses without skipping pages?

Well, one of the ways to achieve this is by including call to action in e-learning courses. Usually, a call to action leads to behavior change and that could result in performance improvement. So, let’s see how to add call to action in your courses that could prompt your learners to complete the course:

Asking questions: Asking questions in the beginning of the course can elicit interest, make learners think, and motivate them to make a connection with the course.

Creating excitement: Badges or trophies can be used to motivate learners to complete a given challenge. Let learners walk through different challenges in the course. The best way to throw challenges is by asking thought provoking questions and having them take part in game based activities.

Scenarios: Add scenarios related to learners’ working environment. They help learners understand how to react in a given situation. For example in a sales training course a customer can be shown graphics, animation or video about the way one must handle customer enquiries and convert the enquiry into an opportunity. The aim of the project is to impart selling skills to the learners. A hypothetical response can be given in response to a customers’ enquiry, asking learners to select the most appropriate option. If answered correctly the interaction with customer continues or else a feedback pops up on the screen explaining why his choice is incorrect.

Sense of urgency: Create a sense of urgency in completing a course or an assessment. Urgency cuts through inertia; you can add time based incentive to take an action. For example, the first 25 learners who complete the course can receive awards.

Tell Learners What to Expect: Tell learners what to expect from the course; if learners do not know what’s in it for them, they will be uninterested right from the beginning of the course. They need to be given a valid reason to explore the course. Emphasize more on individual learning goals, which is a sure way to attract learners’ attention.

Clear Navigation: Navigation is an important element in a call to action. Clear and simple navigation enables learners to explore the course without any hitch. Progress bar showing the progress of the course is very helpful. A well laid call to action won’t leave the learner puzzled about what to do next. If a learner has to complete some interaction before clicking the Next Button, the call should be clearly denoted by popping an alert on the screen to complete the activity. After an activity is completed the Next Button should be highlighted telling the learner to click next.

Interactive and Interesting: Let learners interact with the course and make them actively participate in the activities. An interactive e-learning course is a must to engage learners from the beginning to the end. A course can be made interactive with Games, simulations, quizzes, avatars or e-learning agents, click on tabs, slide shows, Hotspots, videos, graphics etc.

Successful e-learning courses engage learners from the beginning to the end of the course. Call to action promises a remarkable experience to learners. An e-learning course should be something which motivates users to take action that will lead to positive impact.
