Designing Healthcare Training Courses with Articulate Storyline

With the growth of eLearning, companies in different sectors are using it extensively to train their employees effectively, and the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector is no exception. To enhance their employees’ skills and competencies, the healthcare industry is using eLearning.

In today’s market, many rapid authoring tools are available. The popular ones are Articulate Storyline, Captivate, Lectora etc. and among them, I think “Articulate Storyline” is the most powerful. It has built-in templates and features that help reduce eLearning development time to a large extent.

In this blog, I would like to share how I designed and developed a health care course for one of our client’s using Articulate Storyline.

1. Scenario-based Approach

The content of the health care course was dry and text heavy. I decided to use scenario-based learning because it is an effective strategy that makes the eLearning course engaging. It also helps learners’ involve in the learning as they can relate themselves to the situation and the characters in the scenario. In Storyline, many built-in illustrated characters are available, and we can change their pose, expression and perceptive.

In the scenario, we have used two characters. This scenario is used to mock up a conversation, where the learner collects information and chooses a correct response.

2. Learning Objectives

In an eLearning course, the learning objectives screen is the most powerful element. According to Robert Mager, a learning objective is a statement, in specific and measurable terms that describes what the learner will know, or be able to do, as a result of engaging in a learning activity.

In this course, I thought of asking questions instead of stating the learning objectives. This will make the learners’ think about the answers and they get engaged better. For example, the learning objectives were to:

  • Define the terms Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Bioavailability
  • Explain the process of Pharmacokinetics
  • Explain how clinical effect of drugs is measured in Pharmacodynamics
  • List the common routes of drug administration

3. Interactivities

Interactivities enable learners’ to interact and keep them engaged throughout the course.Storyline has default interactivities such as click on tabs, click on images, click on numbers, slide shows, roll overs, hotspots etc. The use of different types of interactivities makes eLearning courses interactive and engaging.

In this course, on a single slide, I need to explain how the drug acts on the human body. For this, I used hotspots, a type of interactivity, readily available in Storyline. The learner had to click the mouse over a hotspot to see the information.


4. Videos

Videos can be used to reinforce critical information and play out realistic situations. With Storyline, videos can be easily edited and controllers can be added to them. Videos can be used to depict real scenarios and help learners’ gain knowledge effectively, as they usually go through these situations in their day to day life.


5. Assessments

Assessments in eLearning are not only used to assess learners’ but also used to reinforce learning. In Storyline, many built-in assessments such as single select, multiple select, drag and drop, true or false, etc. are available.

For assessments, various types of select questions are given. The learner just needs to select various options and click on submit. This does not help to gain the learners’ attention. Therefore, as an instructional designer, I decided to represent different types of select questions in the form of a drag and drop interactivity. Using triggers and variables, the interactvity is designed in such a way that the learner has to drag the options and drop in the space provided. The interactivity makes the assessment more interesting and engaging.


These are some instructional design strategies I have used to make the course interactive and engaging for learners.
