When designing e-learning courses, we use attention grabbers in the form of pre-tests, stories, ice-breaker questions, animations and images to increase the learners’ curiosity and draw their interest to take the course and learn more.
Adding audio and music to the courses, is one of the attention grabbers. As we know music affects our energy levels and emotions. We listen to music to create desired moods to make ourselves happy, to dance, to meditate, to relax, to remember precious moments and memories etc.
In the same way, using music for training makes the learning process more quick and easy. It adds interest, impact, and fun to the eLearning courses.
Adding Music helps to,
- engage learners
- increase attention
- improve memory
- release stress
- create a lively atmosphere
- increases excitement to learn
- add an element of fun
- increase concentration
- heighten imagination
Let us see a couple of case studies for different training types on how music can be applied in e learning courses.
Safety training – for one of our clients, we have developed a course on senses and hazards. To teach the concept “Distinguishing sounds”, first we played a sound sample of five sounds (air compressor, a siren, a CB radio, a phone ringing, and a horn of a vehicle) and asked learners to distinguish how many different sounds they can hear. This was a good strategy to teach how noise in the environment can blend together, limiting a person’s ability to detect a hazard. Also, throughout the course we have used an ambient music, which adds an emotional edge and impacts retention.
Here are a few music samples we have used in this course:
Sales Training – One of our clients used a learning strategy of a travel expedition, to teach the concept on food across the world, where the traveler moves from one region to another and answers a question related to that region. For this strategy, we used helicopter and forest theme background music, to give it a lively environment experience to the learners.
Here is a sample audio of forest theme we used:
This is how Sound effects, music, and ambience help us bring the eLearning course to life! Do you use music along with audio in your e learning courses? I would love to hear from you on your strategies of using sound effects, background music in your courses. Do share your comments.
