3 Pitfalls to Avoid Before Developing an Audio Script for E-learning Courses

Using audio narration in e-learning courses impacts learner’s engagement and, of course, it is a good instructional strategy. E-learning courses with first-rate audio script and effective narration reduce the cognitive load of learners and help learners to focus on courses. It also increases the efficacy of e-learning courses. Audio script acts as backbone for all e-learning courses, especially when the courses are for auditory learners.

Hence, one of the most important thing an instructional designer must be aware of before developing a storyboard is to develop an effective audio script.

Here are the three useful tips to develop effective and flawless audio scripts for your custom e-learning courses.

  1. Don’t edit unless you understand the content: An instructional designer must be completely aware of all the inputs given by the client. Seeking the help of SMEs (subject matter experts) is an optimal solution if you have queries regarding the content. Developing/editing the audio script without proper knowledge can change the meaning and context and this is not a good instructional design practice.
  2. Don’t add examples without SMEs: Using examples to explain a concept are considered to be the best way to keep learners engaged into the course. Adding examples to e-learning courses increases the problem-solving skills of learners in real time. Usually, SMEs have good knowledge on real-time situations, where a learner faces problems and learns how to avoid them. Hence, it is recommended that you confirm with an SME before adding examples to your e-learning courses. It is not a good practice to add irrelevant examples, which are likely to confuse or divert the learners’ attention from the course objectives.
  3. Use simple sentences: It’s better to use simple and short sentences in audio scripts rather than lengthy sentences. A lengthy sentence may confuse the learner and divert his or her attention off the course. Hence, it is recommended to split complex sentences into two or more simple sentences.

Note: Before developing an audio script, make sure that the script is related to the content on screen and not anything different
