Tips to Evaluate Voice-Over Scripts for ELearning Courses

We enjoy watching movies, don’t we? Not only do we enjoy the visual spectacle, but we love the music, lyrics, and the dialogues as well. Movies with good dialogues, music/ lyrics, and screenplay, have a great recall value with audiences. Wouldn’t it be great if the same is true of eLearning courses as well?

We’ve heard people talk about engaging eLearning courses that include lots of interactivities. However, not much is talked about the audio narration, though it is a significant component of an eLearning course that enhances learning. While going through a course, many times, learners mute the audio, finding it to be more of a distraction than an asset. They can’t be blamed for it, as a poorly created voice-over script could be a real pain. Here is a checklist to analyze the effectiveness of voice-over scripts. So, when your eLearning provider sends you voice-over scripts for approval, check out the following aspects.

Are you able to understand it the first time?

When analyzing voice-over scripts, the first and foremost thing to remember is that, writing for the ear needs to be different from writing for the eyes, as seen in an on-screen text. When you read it, you do it at your own pace; but while listening, you don’t have that luxury. Therefore, assess if the listeners can understand the subject matter the very first time they hear it.

Is the language simple and clear?

Narration needs to be simple, lucid and clear, so that audiences find it easy to understand. Check out if the language meets these criteria, while analyzing voiceovers.

Is the tone friendly and conversational?

It is easier to remember content presented in a conversational style rather than in the form of formal statements. The sentence, “Exercise caution when opening bottles that contain chemicals” has a more personal tone, and would be preferred over a more authoritative tone as in, “You should be very careful when you open any containers with chemicals.”

Are there sufficient pauses for learners to process the information?

Sometimes, pauses in an audio act similar to the white spaces in a visual. Make sure your narrations give time for the learners to process the knowledge, which is presented on-screen along with the audio.

Do the notes to the narrator have pronunciation guidelines?

When sending voiceover scripts to narrators, eLearning providers need to give instructions about pronunciation of unique or technical terms. Similarly, if there are any words that need emphasis, it needs to be indicated in the script, either through bold or italics. Check out for these recommendations in the voiceover script.
