Watch, Try & DO (WTD) Approach for Simulations

Simulations can be one of most effective tools in an eLearning course. We, at CommLab India, develop highly interactive courses with complex simulations using the WATCH, TRY, DO (WTD) approach to train learners on how to use a particular software or product. The learners get an opportunity to learn, practice and execute the operations. So, what exactly is the Watch, Try & Do Approach?

The Watch, Try and Do approach as an instructional strategy enables holistic learning. Here, the learner first is given an overview of the process, procedure or the operation that needs to be explained. This is popularly called the WATCH step. In the TRY step, he can participate in the process where in he is expected to apply the instructions he just learnt. He is guided with pop ups and hints at every stage prompting him about the next step in the operation or process. In the final DO step, the learner is all by himself and needs to apply the knowledge that he has acquired, remember the steps and do them on his own. If he gets stuck at any point, he is given the option to call for help. To view this approach in action, click on the link below.

We have used Captivate and Flash to create simulations. I would be interested to learn what would be your preferred authoring tool to create simulations. Do share your thoughts.
