Build and Roll Out Learning Content: How to Fast Track?

John is a product manager, who wants to roll out training programs globally for his sales staff, within a month. His training content is currently in the form of PPTs, which need to be converted into online courses. He wants this training program to be launched worldwide in a month: Is this possible?

Though it sounds difficult, it is possible. You need to ensure three key aspects. Firstly, define the learning design methodology based on the learning need, user and content. Second, understand the technological requirement and third, get a sense of volume and scale. Let’s look at each of them in detail.

Learning Design Methodology

When designing the methodology, ask questions such as, what is the need for this training? Who are the learners, what learning outcomes are expected from the training? Is the training required at the knowledge level, or at the applications level? Once you have answers to these questions, you will be in a position to analyze the content. According to Ruth Colvin Clark, content is categorized into five types – facts, concepts, processes, procedures and principles. Let’s see each one of them in brief and how they can be taught.

Understanding the Technology

The next important aspect you need to comprehend is the nitty-gritty of technology. This is will ensure that learning is delivered without any glitches. You need to be aware of learner’s IT environment like operating system, browsers, is it to be deployed on PC or Laptop or mobile devices. You need to consider where the learning will be hosted, if hosted on LMS does it have to be Scorm or AICC compliant. The major component of authoring tool is to understand what it can and what it cannot do. Let’s see the four major eLearning authoring tools and how they can shape the eLearning courses better.

  • Adobe Flash: Consider Flash when you would like to design highly interactive and engaging course
  • Lectora: Consider Lectora when you would like to design courses for multiple languages and multiple devices

  • Captivate: Consider Captivate when you need to develop screen based training and Software Simulations

Sense of Scale and Volume:

Sense of scale and volume is an understanding of training needs in terms of reach. Let’s see the factors to be considered when planning out eLearning programs.

High volume to be produced

For example, if you wish to launch 20 hrs of elearning courses quickly, it will impact the learning strategy you adopt. You need to have assembly line discipline, if you wish to maintain timelines for meeting the deadlines and processes and systems need to be in place to check that the courses are consistent and standardized.

High Value – Low Volume

You need to have sense of scale and volume for eLearning courses that are of high value, which are critical to business and culture. For example, launching a high impact change management course for top management, your learning strategy would differ.

Translations & Localization

Your sense of scale and volume is needed when you are planning out eLearning courses globally, in multiple languages, for example developing elearning for your sales staff on the new product and would like to launch this training globally in multiple languages, your strategy differs.
