Tips for Creating an Ideal Safety Training Plan

Safety Training involves guiding people to do something correctly, telling them what they should or should not do and providing information about the best practices that keep them and their company safe. You need to have a plan in place. Let’s see what you can do to plan for your safety training program.

Define the training objectives: Before you plan your training, you need to clearly define the current skills and knowledge of the employees and match it with the expected skills and knowledge. Are there any gaps? Bridging those gaps is the ultimate objective of the training program.

Review cases of safety compromise: If you had any accidents or breach of safety parameters recently, you need to review them and identify the loopholes that caused them. Your training program needs to incorporate the key learning from these incidents.

Consult key stakeholders: Employees on the shop floor are the best source of information. Consult them to identify training requirements. They will be helpful in giving a direction to the training program as they know the actual ground-level situation best.

Key Parameters: Apart from the general objectives that you need to meet for the training you also need to keep in mind certain key parameters.

  • Management concurrence: Senior management and supervisors might require special training for safety awareness. Assess if there are any such requirements. If they are convinced about business risks due to lack of safety they are more likely to appreciate your efforts and initiatives to organize safety training.
  • Legal obligations: Your organization is legally obliged to provide certain safety training such as First Aid. You need to verify any such requirements that are specific to your industry. If so, you will need to incorporate those into the training program.
  • Organizational requirements: Your organization will have its own safety parameters apart from those specified by a legal body. You will get a clear idea about these requirements by consulting the senior management and the employees.

Evaluation procedures: It is not sufficient to conduct training programs. Continuous assessment has to be made to ensure that employees are following all the safety parameters that have been introduced during the training program. Therefore, right in the planning stage, a trainer has to make a provision for the evaluation process at the end of the program to measure its effectiveness. In addition, he/ she should also make sure that the training program is updated in accordance with the changes that take place in the organization such as the introduction of new equipment or change of location of the manufacturing facility.

Providing safety training is not easy but it need not be a burden either. With proper planning you can easily chalk out an ideal safety training plan for your organization.
