It is common knowledge that over the last 15 years, many companies have expanded their operations to new shores. The phenomenon of globalization has resulted in new business opportunities as well as challenges.
One of the major challenges faced by MNCs is training their geographically dispersed, multilingual, multinational staff members. Most global firms use e-learning to overcome this problem as online courses can be accessed anytime, anywhere. Furthermore, e-learning courses can be translated effectively to deliver high quality training in the native languages of workforce.
In this blog, I would like to share some best practices to be followed while developing translation courses.
- Make sure to use content from the finalized English course.If you send the wrong text to the translator, it will lead tore-work and additional costs.
- Create templates by using content from the English course. If you want to sync the on-screen content with audio, you have to create a template with two columns, as shown below. The first column contains on-screen text and its respective audio script in the adjacent column. This will help to develop translation courses quickly.
- Make sure that the entire content is placed in the template. If you miss content in the template, you, you have to send it again for translation. This will lead to additional cost and time.
- Once the template is ready, the next step would be to translate. Use skilled professionals to translate your learning content. Do not use Google translator or any other tool for translations.
- If you have any resources that reference to the content, then send it to the translator along with template. This will help the translator to translate the content in the context of the English course.
- Give sufficient time for translators to translate the content. If you restrict timelines, it will affect the translation quality.
- Make sure that the content is proofread bythe subject matter expert before development of the functional course begins. This will help you receive minimal feedback after course review.
- List out the technical words and send them to the proofreader to give pronunciation instructions to the narrator. This will help to avoid audio re-recording.
- Once you receive the reviewed document from the proofreader, send it to the translator to check if the changes made by client will reflect in other places.
- Break the audio script into smaller parts if you have audio synching with onscreen text in the course. This will help the developer to sync the audio in less time.
- Check the fonts correctly as some languages will not support the English course fonts. Here are some fonts used in different languages.
- Simplified Chinese – SimSun
- Korean – Batang
- Japanese – MS PGothic
- Sync the audio with thehelp of transliterations and pauses as you may not be able to understand other languages.
- Make sure to include the translated text in GUI, script pane and in images.
- Functionality of the translated course should match with that of the English course.
