Every learning management system has some common and some unique features. LMS providers keep on creating new add-on modules to promote their LMS. Corporate training keeps on purchasing these add-on modules, but as a training manager do you know what are all the features your LMS has? If you are aware of any new feature do you know how to use it?
Any LMS can have tons of features already installed in the LMS which come with the initial package or some features may have been purchased for it separately for your own organization’s training requirement. When you login into the LMS you can see all the features in the dashboard itself. Some features are available but not activated or activated but not in use.
As an LMS administrator for past 4 years, I got an opportunity to work on various LMSs features and with various industries’ training managers. Every LMS has a few hundreds of features available but based on my experience I can say only 50% of them are used. For example, multilingual, user wise themes, skills & competencies, talent management and Web 2.0 Features such as, social network, forms, blogs, chat, etc. These are available in the LMS but not in use for learning and training.
I would like to share four features which most of the LMSs have and which may not be in use:
1. As you know almost every LMS has multilingual feature which is very useful to the learner. You may or may not know that it is possible to set the default language to each user account. When a learner logs in, the system automatically changes the language based on the profile. If your organization is spread across the world, you can setup languages based on country.
2. In the similar way, we can configure specific theme to each individual or group/audience. If your organization has many other business units, you can set different themes based on business units.
3. One more feature which is common in most of the LMS is the type of content. In LMS you can upload not only SCORM/AICC compliant courses but also non-compliance courses, videos, PDF, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, recorded web conference videos (WebEx/GoTo Meeting) and almost any kind of digital content.
4. Most of the LMS have assignment activity that is very useful for the instructors to give online assignments to the participants. They can evaluate and give feedback on the submitted assignment online. This feature can also be used to conduct collaborative online workshop.
You may consider using each and every feature of the LMS with its user-friendly interface to manage training effectively. One thing we should remember is that these features may not be free in the package you are using, but your Corporate Training may be paying for it. So it becomes necessary to know what all your LMS can do. In my opinion, it is a good practice to read the latest user-guides, attend webinars conducted by LMS providers, or consult LMS administrators to know more about LMS features.
I would like to recommend that you find out whether these features are available in your LMS package and any other useful feature which is not in use. You may explore it and implement it for effective use of your LMS.
