4 Tips for Developing E-learning Course Using Rapid Authoring Tools

With the use of rapid authoring tools, eLearning course development has become faster and simpler. To offer more powerful options to users, the features and capabilities of these authoring tools are being improved. People from non-technical backgrounds can also develop eLearning courses, instead of depending on programmers. However, it is important to keep certain factors in mind while you develop an eLearning course.

Here are 4 tips that will help you while using rapid authoring tools for developing your eLearning courses.

1. Assess the Nature of your Content

As an Instructional Designer (ID), the first thing you need to consider is the content type. There are five content types – concepts, principles, facts, procedures and processes. Identifying the content type helps you decide on the appropriate instructional strategy.

Apart from this, you also need to identify gaps in the content flow during the content analysis stage itself. This will enable you to create the course with a logical flow, which makes it easy for the learner to understand.

2. Know Your Tools

There are many authoring tools, each with its advantages and disadvantages. It is important to understand the features of each tool.

For example, Adobe Captivate can be used if there is a need to develop a simulation based training program and Articulate Studio is ideal to create product training programs in quick time.

For training employees on software applications, it is better to use tools that can create software simulations.

To make courses for compliance or product training, use tools that help you rollout courses quickly.

3. Keep in Mind The Budget And Time Available

Cost and time of the course development will play important role in deciding on the learning approach to be used.

You can ask the following questions yourself before developing a course.

  • Can default templates be used or should new templates be developed?
  • What type of interactivities and media elements should be used?
  • When is the submission date?

Create standard templates and reuse them to reduce cost and time. Templates also provide consistency to the course. Allot sufficient time for instructional design, course development and review and quality analysis while planning the project.

4. Ensure Speed with Quality

While developing a course, there may be a lot of quality issues that need to be resolved.  These errors may be at any stage of the course development. These small errors can be eliminated, if there is a proper quality check.

For this, you can prepare a checklist for each stage of the eLearning course development process.  This helps you avoid re-rework, and we can control the quality and the eLearning course development schedule.
