Creating a Matching Assessment in Articulate Storyline

Many times, we are asked to create interactive eLearning assessments which cannot be developed using the default features of rapid authoring tools. In these cases, we are left with no other option but to customize the default features of the tools.

One of our clients wanted us to create matching assessments, wherein the learners needs to drag an option and drop it on the right answer. When he drops the option correctly, a green line should appear connecting the the option and the answer. If the learner drops the option on the wrong answer, a red line needs to connect the two.

Matching drag & drop

Let’s see how we met this requirement.

Step 01:

Create the drag objects and drop targets.

Matching Objects

Step 02:

Draw connecting lines from each drag object to every drop target.

Option 01 connecting lines

Name the lines:

Line between option_01 and A is 1a.

Line between option_01 and B is 1b.

Line between option_01 and C is 1c.

Option 02 connecting lines

Name the lines:

Line between option_02 and A is 2a.

Line between option_02 and B is 2b.

Line between option_02 and C is 2c.

Option 03 connecting lines

Name the lines:

Line between option_03 and A is 3a.

Line between option_03 and B is 3b.

Line between option_03 and C is 3c.

As shown in the above screenshots, change the color of connecting lines between the drag object and wrong answers to red; the color of connecting lines between the drag object and the correct answers to green and set the initial state of all the lines to Hidden.

Step 03:

Duplicate the drag objects; rename them as Option_01 Hidden, Option_02 Hidden, and Option_03 Hidden respectively; change their initial states to Hidden.

Hidden drag objects

Step 04:

Add trigger to disable the drag object once it is dropped on any drop target.

Hide_Option01

Hidden_Option01_Visible

Similarly, add the triggers for Option_02 and Option_03.

Step 05:

Now, add triggers to make the connecting lines visible.

Trigger_for_Line_1a

Trigger for Line 1b

Trigger for Line 1c

Similarly, add the triggers for the connecting lines of Option_02 and Option_03.

Preview and check the functionality.

This is a matching assessment where the color of the connecting lines reveal to what extent the learner has answered the question correctly. You can go ahead and add a Submit button to reveal the correct answer.
