The term Six Sigma orginated with the application of statistical model in manufacturing processes. With the improvement of manufacturing process sigma rating indicated its yield or the percentage of defect-free products it can create. This Six Sigma process is the one which produces products of which 99.99966% statistically expected to be free of defects which is 3.4 defects per million.
In an organization producing products that are error free, is the main objective. This may be an ideal state, but when you try to achieve it, there is a chance to minimize errors. Basically, Six Sigma is an improvement methodology, which focuses on understanding and reducing variation in processes. The goal of Six Sigma is to eliminate inefficiencies and redundancies.
Many organizations are trying to implement Six Sigma in their organization. For successful implementation of Six Sigma, training their employees is an important aspect. Along with training, coaching and mentoring are also very important.
One of the cost effective approaches to train the employees on Six Sigma tools, is eLearning. This is often criticized, because engaging learners in a self paced learning environment for Six Sigma training, is difficult.
At CommLab India, we designed an eLearning course on Six Sigma tools, for one of our customers. We used various instructional strategies, to make the learner feel engaged and comfortable in understanding the fundamentals and principles of the Six Sigma.
Here I wish to share a few strategies that we used !
For the content such as Six Sigma, there are a lot of processes that have to be included in the course.
We used interactivities such as click on hotspots, tabs, slideshows and animations.
Six Sigma is all about problem-solving. Case studies are a great way to keep the learners engaged or, involved, in an interactive exchange and resolve problems by thinking creatively. It greatly improves the learning experience. We used case studies to make the learner think and analyze the content, so that he can take a decision on what would be the possible solution.
After every learning objective has been covered, it is important to reinforce the learner with the content. The assessments will reinforce learning and also evaluate the course. We used realistic scenarios, associated with the learning objectives, to question the learners.
Tool – Articulate Presenter
The tool with which the course was developed, was Articulate Presenter. This was the choice of preference, by the client. Moreover, it is easy to include animated explanations to highlight important points. This tool also supports images and video. There is also multi-level navigation and branching, for the convenience of the learner. This tool supports the high level interactivities, such as quizzes and puzzles.
Six Sigma is a very valuable intervention for any organization, for eliminating inefficiencies and redundancies. For this training is a very essential step, especially for those organizations that are widely spread. eLearning is a very effective way to implement such training processes.
