Have you ever watched a James Bond movie? Many of us have. Right? The introductory scene catches our attention, and this sets the stage for engaging the audience throughout the movie. Similarly, when you impress your learners’ in the first few minutes of your online course, your job of creating learner delight is half-done.
Here I am going to share some eLearning design tricks to impress your learners’ in less than two minutes.
Start with an Ice-breaker
Ice-breaker is an excellent way to start your eLearning course and catch the attention of learners’ quickly. It will help your learners’ get into the right mood. They can be a series of questions, posed to the learners’ in the context of their learning need.
Let’s see an example from one of our courses that we have designed with an interesting ice-breaker.
Set Learning Objectives
Informing the learners, prior to the course, what they will be able to do after completing the online learning course motivates them. It is important that the learning objectives, which inform the learners’ about his course should be:
- Simple and brief
- Appropriate for the learner, achievable and realistic
- Communicate its intent and leave very little space for misinterpretation
- Specify performance

Keep Navigation Intuitive
Make sure the navigation is simple and easy for the learners. Do not make the learners’ think where the next button is, where the back button is or where the volume controls are. Allow the learner to freely navigate the e-learning courses without any slide restrictions. Remember that your learners’ are adults, and they shouldn’t be restricted. Let:
- Learners’ sail through the course effortlessly
- Learners’ choose the topic they want to learn
Attractive Visual Design
The top contributor for making the great first impression is the visual component of the eLearning course. Using attractive GUIs, clear images, appropriate colors and consistent fonts makes your eLearning course visually rich. Especially, the course starting screen plays an immense role in drawing the first impression.
Of course, there are numerous other tricks. Please add on to the list!
