Designing and Development of an E-learning Course

Henry Ford once remarked, “coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success” .

Designing and developing an eLearning course is not a one man army’s job. It involves a number of professionals who perform different tasks to accomplish the common goal.

The design and development of an eLearning course consists of various principles and procedures, which when implemented result in desired outcomes. The resources that are required for developing an effective online course are:

 Content

In eLearning, content refers to resources like existing presentations, or classroom training materials or on-the job training handouts etc. The task here is to find the prioritized and important content that is easy and understandable.

Who are eLearning experts? Are they people just working in the industry for a decade or so? Well, they are the people who are experts in their profession such as subject matter experts, who give us the “raw material”, instructional designers, who facilitate learning, visual designers, who make the course visually appealing and the technical experts who develop the entire course.

 Current technology

The important aspect in every field is technology. As for developing an eLearning course and delivering it, we need to have specific authoring tools, audio, and video software. A learning management system is also needed for hosting the course.

The process of design and development of an eLearning course :

  • The content provided by the client is first analyzed to categorize it as Facts, Concepts, Processes, Procedures or Principles. Based on the content analysis the presentation pattern is decided. Once the analysis is done, the next step is to design and develop the course.
  • In this step, the learning strategy is finalized and the learning objectives are determined. An outline, based on the content type, is prepared and the storyboard is developed. Once the storyboard is developed, based on the design strategy and the presentation patterns, it is sent to the client for approval.
  • Once it is approved, the storyboard is developed with the selected authoring tool such as Articulate Storyline.

This proves that eLearning design and development, to be successful, needs to be planned meticulously and carried out effectively. Please do share your views.
