Complying with the regulatory laws of an organization paves ways for the success of the organization. Hence, it is vital that compliance training is marked as primary and important in every organization’s training calendars. E-learning goes well with compliance training. This is because e-learning can quickly reach a large population of employees and get them acquainted with the changing policies and regulations. So, while e-learning is mostly preferred, it is important for e-learning developers to adhere to certain design strategies while creating a compliance course.
In my blog today, I wish to discuss a design strategy that we have adopted for compliance training through e-learning.
- Scenario-based approach: Usually, compliance content would be very long and text heavy. Our strategy was to make that text heavy content into an engaging course, which our learners could take without getting into the state of boredom. For this, we used a scenario-based approach that started with a message from the head of the organization. We introduced a character to represent the head of the organization that addressed the employees (learners) and explained the importance of complying with the regulations of the company. The entire learning was volunteered by this character and also the other characters. The elements of learning were incorporated within the course progression.
- Use of interactivities:As said earlier, compliance content is very long and text heavy. This is due to the fact that companies have a vast set of regulations and policies regarding their business trade. For instance, a healthcare organization may have policies regarding product promotion, medical utilities, education and training, scientific research and many more. Learning about all these guidelines might be very tedious for the employees. To mitigate this challenge, we made effective use of interactivities through which learners could interact with the content and explore learning on their own.We presented each section of the compliance unit separately so that learners could just click and learn about the respective unit. An effective use of images and graphics were made for each compliance unit in order to enhance learning.
- Assessment strategy for retention and recall: While learners learn about thecompliance of the company, it is vital that they are able to remember and recall it in future. For this, our approach was to include assessments in the course that would help to check employees’ understanding of policies and procedures. We included formative assessments after each section of the compliance unit so that learners could take the assessments and then proceed to the next compliance unit. A formative feedback was also accompanied with each question that would help learners know the right and wrong responses. This was again an effective approach to reinforce learning and instill knowledge about compliance of the organization.
Compliance training has a great impact on the quality of work that is carried out in organizations. Hence, it is mandatory that every organization transits employees on compliance. By following the aforementioned e-learning strategy, compliance training can be made interesting and engaging for the learners.
