Standardization refers to a set of methods that must be followed in all modules in the same way. Standardization ensures consistency in and quality of a course.Standardization can be achieved by concentrating on these areas of eLearning courseware deisgn.
- Interface standards (standards related to menu, navigation etc.)
- Compatibility standards (standards related to installation and initial launching etc.)
- Production quality standards (standards related to text, graphics, appropriate language etc.)
- Instructional design standards (standards related to presentation, demonstration, feedback/ guidance etc. )
Here are a few benefits of standardization in eLearning.
Reduces Development Time
The content which we receive may have many common elements such as definitions, process, procedures etc. Deciding on various presentation patterns for each of them and standardizing templates for them would reduce a lot of eLearning course development time.
Increases Consistency and Improves Quality
Many people are involved in designing and developing a course and each one of them has his own style of presentation. This may result in an inconsistent product. In order to avoid such a situation and increase consistency, standardization is needed. With increased consistency, a high quality eLearning product is created.
Once the standardization of templates is completed, we can reuse the templates whenever required. This, in turn, helps achieve consistency which saves time and money.
Standardization of components enables us to reuse them any number of times, reducing the eLearning development cost.
With standardization, the look and feel of the courses remains the same. This helps motivate the learner to take up the course. Hope this blog is informative. Do share if you have anything to add to the list.
